Apache Software

The Apache Software Foundation provides support for the Apache community of open-source software projects. The Apache projects are characterized by a collaborative, consensus based development process, an open and pragmatic software license, and a desire to create high quality software that leads the way in its field. We consider ourselves not simply a group of projects sharing a server, but rather a community of developers and users.

Apache HTTP Server
The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and maintain an open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems including UNIX and Windows NT. The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server that provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards.

Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April 1996. The November 2005 Netcraft Web Server Survey found that more than 70% of the web sites on the Internet are using Apache, thus making it more widely used than all other web servers combined.

Some widely used Apache Projects
  • HTTP Server
  • Ant : Apache Ant is a software tool for automating software build processes. It is similar to make but is written in the Java language, requires the Java platform, and is best suited to building Java projects.
  • Beehive : Apache Beehive is a Java Application Framework designed to make the development of Java EE based applications quicker and easier. It
  • Cocoon : Apache Cocoon, usually just called Cocoon, is a web application framework built around the concepts of pipeline, separation of concerns and component-based web development. The framework focuses on XML and XSLT publishing and is built using the Java programming language.
  • Jakarta : It is named after the conference room at Sun Microsystems where the majority of discussions leading to the project's creation took place. The Jakarta Project creates and maintains open source software for the Java platform.
  • Maven : Maven is an Open Source build tool that made the revolution in the area of building projects. Like the build systems as "make" and "ant" it is not a language to combine the build components but it is a build lifecycle framework.
  • Struts : Struts is an application development framework that is designed for and used with the popular J2EE (Java 2, Enterprise Edition) platform. It cuts time out of the development process and makes developers more productive by providing them a series of tools and components to build applications with.
  • Tomcat : Tomcat is the Reference Implementation for the Java Servlet 2.2 and JavaServer Pages 1.1 Technologies. It is the official reference implementation for these complementary technologies. Tomcat is a servlet container with a JSP environment. A servlet container is a runtime shell that manages and invokes servlets on behalf of users.
